Biogas

“Industry Circularization” refers to an approach in which circular economic principles are applied to the agriculture and secondary manufacturing industries where interlinked product business partners work together to form a closed loop. Meanwhile, “Circular Industrialization” refers to the rise of new business opportunities when resources are reused within the industrial system. Biogas is an industry with great potential for the “Circular Industrialization”  

Stinky, dirty, and messy wastes that were shunned by people in the past, such as poultry manures, food waste, and organic sludges, are actually one of the few “resources” Taiwan can claim as its own in the circular economy world. With careful planning, they can be used to meet energy and soil needs.

Taiwan produces over 20 million tons of organic resources such as rice straw and husk fibers, poultry manures, agricultural by-products such as mushroom bags, sludges from the food-processing industry, industrial waste such as bagasse, kitchen waste from cities, and sewage sludges each year. All of these resources are “non-import reliant.”

Applying one of circular economy’s three principles, “high-value utilization”, organic resources should first be converted to high-value products such as medicine and specialty chemicals, food and feed, and bulk materials.

However, if the organic resources could not be used in the above mentioned manner, another option is to produce biogas by putting the organic resources through the anaerobic fermentation process. Biogas has multiple uses:

  •  Biogas could be used to generate electricity, heat, or it could be further purified into fuel.
  •  Biogas residuals could be used as fertilizer, which provides nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to the land as nutrition.

According to our research and analysis, there are more than 20 million tons of organic resources in Taiwan on a yearly basis. If even half of them could be recycled, they would bring about many benefits to the economy, environment and society, such as:

  • Biogas is a more stable way to generate electric power compared to solar and wind powers, as it is not as affected by the seasons. Biogas could generate over 1.6 billion kilowatts of electricity per year, which could power up to 450,000 families.
  • Biogas from half of the organic resources can reduce 1.1 million tons of CO2 equivalent, which is comparable to the carbon sequestration capabilities of 2,800 Daan Forest Park in Taiwan.
  • If only pig manure was used to produce biogas, the fertilizers left in the biogas residuals would be equal to 4 million bags of chemical fertilizers, which is equivalent to 35% of the total amount of phosphate, 20% of the potash, and 15% of the nitrogen applied to Taiwan's land every year.
  • Approximately 150 centralized biomass energy centers can be established (processing capacity: 200 metric tons/day), creating 4,500 direct/indirect job opportunities

Many countries have already recognized the potential of biogas development, and began promoting the biogas industry. For example, there are 10,000 biogas power plants in Germany. In contrast, most biogas plants built in Taiwan in the past were ancillary facilities to pig farms. Their main function was wastewater treatment, and they were not regarded as an industry that could create energy resources.

If the development of biogas is restrategized from the perspective of reusing Taiwan’s organic resources, then it will surely become a new industry with more than 100 fields and valuation in the tens of billions. Aside from just developing biogas, the industry would include biogas power generation equipment, resources gathering and treatment, biogas purification, and the utilization of biogas residuals. Since biogas is regional, it can boost local economy, local investments, and local jobs. Combined with advanced information and communication management technology, it can create an efficient, safe, hygienic and inspiring biogas energy industry.  

2025 Short-Term Goal

  • Use organic resources properly and aim to create 100 to 150 biogas energy centers. Make the biogas industry into a new promising industry that is able to scale up economically and employ workers.

2030 Long-Term Vision

  • Integrate knowledge and experience and export the service of “biogas energy service and knowledge” instead of just selling biogas equipment. Let Taiwan become the biogas center of Asia.
